A weekend of strength and weakness

This weekend has been a bit up and down with stuff.

Friday evening Lau, my sister and I went to the theatre in Birmingham to see Return to the Forbidden Planet. I'd been quite excited about this as it is probably one of my favourite musicals and I've seen it a few times. I hadn't clocked when we booked the tickets that it was an amateur performance, so it didn't have the double drum kits built into the stage, it didn't have the characters playing the instruments through the show etc. so was a little dissappointed. On the up side it was a bit of a giggle. After we went out for dinner and I was weak and had a couple of pints of San Miguel. It was Friday night afterall!! So with 2 weeks of no beer the drought had been broken.

Yesterday to make up for it I went to the gym, went for a run and a weights workout. I've not ran for a couple of weeks and it's suprising how quickly you loose the base fitness so did 5km in under 33 mins which was ok. Felt it at the end though.

An to top off the madness of the weekend I'm now sitting in my study looking out the window at the nice weather and our resident birds flying to / from their nest, which is attached to our house, waiting for unit tests to run! Yep, that's right ... tight deadlines etc. means working the weekend again. I don't mind doing it as it will mean we exit dev on time etc. but I would prefer to be playing disc golf. :-)

Anyway back to it, they've finally finished!

A couple of weeks on ...

So the past couple of weeks have been a bit mad. I've not been able to get to the gym due to work and being too tired when I have finally finished work. Last week was a long old week with working the evenings once I got home each night except for Friday and pulled over 55 hrs. Due to this no additional miles where run, however with a some practicing / warm ups over the weekend and 3 competition rounds of disc golf and also club night on Wednesday I've done 5 rounds of disc golf!

As for the tournament, I didn't play great but I did learn a lot through different shots etc. I drove a couple of times with drivers and they all went a bit way ward, so decided to drop down and use my Buzzzz. This had the downside of not getting far enough to get birdies, it did however add some acuracy to my play and on Sunday morning when I only used a Buzzz for drives I shot my best round of the weekend.

On Wednesday evening after some driving practice and trying out a couple of different discs I had another round with Rich and only used my Buzzz (mainly) again. Starting on hole 10 it was an interesting start which was ok but could have been better. Once we got round to hole 1 I only used my Buzzz exclusively for drives and shot an even par. I was 1 under until I grip locked on hole 8 so had to recover for a 4. So for that I was very happy. Now why can't I play like that in tournaments?!?!

Long time no post ...

... because of many reasons. The lack of posting over the past few months is due to a few reasons mainly work related and not wanting to look at a computer screen after a day at work. This in addition to being shattered (due to work) and that's pretty much it.

We've had some pretty tight deadlines recently and due to this long hours and weekends have needed to be worked. This has prevented me from going to the gym and playing disc golf as much as I'd have liked. It makes going to the fridge and grabbing a beer very easy and this is very much the anti exercise :-)

What's been happening over the past few months?!

Well I've been working quite a lot. We've had some pretty big projects coming through dev recently and the deadlines have been incredibly tight. Some of the have involved working late, working weekends, working late weekends and the days I have left the office at a reasonable time I've got home and the last thing I wanted to do was open my laptop and do anything.

Unfortunatly my PDGA rating has gone down again in the latest update. This is bad! I thought I played ok in Feb at Frostbreaker, and I did, but I was a little out of practice and my fitness levels weren't as high as they should have been for an event there. To top it off it was made up of 2 rounds of 27 holes was over 5 hrs straight of golf with no breaks each day. It was a lot of fun though!

On top of that the Quarry Park Spring Fling was 4 rounds of 18; 2 per day. This was also tough, added in with the really crap weather we had it didn't help my rating. On the Saturday I shot my worse competative round there in about 3 years. On the Sunday thinking things couldn't get any worse I ended up shooting my worse competative round there ever! Something needs to be done!

I've been out recently and thrown pretty well although I have been injured twice, once hurt my right shoulder after slipping down the bank on hole 13 and putting out my arm to stop myself (stupid reflexes!) and it jarring my shoulder quite badly. And recently second to last hole threw a forehand approach on hole 17 and just pulled my arm. It hurt a lot! So hopefully will be fit again (arm wise) by the QP open in a couple of weeks time!

Health review - Feb, March, April and May

Well the health review for the past few months has been lacking a lot. I've got rough numbers for Feb but March, April and May will be educated guesses. But recently I have increased my running. I've been averaging between 5 and 10km a week. All on the treadmill as my knees and shins are trying to get use to running again. I've only counted this as a gym visit though so still being out weighed by beer :-)

The reason behind increased running is I want to loose some weight and hit my target I set myself back at the beginning of Feb. I managed to get down to 12 stone before I went to Frostbreaker, but recently that has creeped back up to a steady 12stone 4. I'm still aiming for 11 stone 7 before going down to dorset in August, so that gives me 2 months to loose the best part of a stone. Can this be done? Well thats the challenge. As part of this I'm going to give up beer in June and beyond if it helps :-)

Rough numbers / estimates of beer and exercise over the past few months :

Feb : 6 dg rounds, 6 gym visits, 16 lengths, 27 beers
Mar: 6 dg rounds, 10 gym visits, 0 lengths, 30 beers (including dev social)
Apr: 4 dg rounds, 12 gym visits, 0 lengths, 25 beers
May: 2 dg rounds, 10 gym visits, 0 lengths, 25 beers (including dev social)

So that estimately equates to :

18 rounds of disc golf (including hurt shoulder and elbow so should have been higher!)
38 gym visits
16 lengths
107 beers

June - no beer!

So no beer in June; it's going to be interesting. We've got some interesting deadlines coming up at work and for a dev beer is a good way to relax. I've decided that if I get home and want a beer I need to make myself go to the gym for a run. It will take my mind off it.

In additon to the weight loss and general fitness I've taken up running again as Lau and I are going to run in a 10km "fun run" in September and my initial target was to do it in 1 hr 10mins which seems reasonable. But if I push it and train well I think I could do it in an hour. 10km / h isn't back breaking but it's going to take a bit of dedication and effort to do it. That is the challenge!

The running is going ok generally. I've been running 3 to 5 km each time I go to the gym with my best so far of 5km is about 32/33 minutes. I need to start getting my body use to running for a longer period though. So I'm going to cut down the speed and try and increase the stamina and then work up the speed. I'm quite excited about training for the run and not drinking beer will help me loose some weight as well.

Another 2 miles

Went for another run last night, and my shins really hurt 3 quarters round so walked the last part, but clocked up another 2 miles which is always helpful towards the ratio.

I think its getting to the point that I need to re-join the gym so will look into that over the next couple of weeks and look to get back to working out properly and going to Body Combat regularly to get fit ready for next years national tour!

Still no beers, and I'm not craving beer either which is a bit bizzare!

Last week was a bit rubbish

Last week was a bit rubbish!

Well actually that was a bit of an understatement ...

1) Work was pretty stressful
2) Rosie had to be put down :-(
3) Cracking Migraine headache (and going to A&E)
4) Not going to play DG at Burnlaw (due to (3))

On the upside I did go for a run at the weekend to try and unwind a bit, went on a longish run which involved running around, what seemed like, most of Leamington. Started off going through Victoria Park, ended up past Lockwoods near Trinity School and then across the top of the Parade and down Holly Walk home. It was 4 miles and did it in about 45 (ish) mins which wasn't too bad. I also went for a run on Sunday and did 2 miles in 20mins so was happy with that.

Going out again tonight, need to make sure I get in as much as possible due to getting to the point it will be too dark to run in the evenings ... and at that point its time to join the gym :-)

Only 10 miles/rounds behind the beer now!! :-)

Beer update

Well a week or so has past since the last beer update and in that time the Dev Social has come and gone. It was a good time enjoyed by all with a cracking turn out with over half the dev team attending (there were 13 of us at the pub).

I had a night off from the diet / beer free (which has been going well) and had a evening with my other woman (yes Lau knows!). In the end I had 5 pints of my lovely Stella. They went down slowly, yet well. Then Russ decided we should have some Sambuka ... yuck yuck yuck!!

Anyway, the beer ratio is back to being more rubbish again. I've had an issue with my toe for a few days so I've not been able to go for a run which I am going to try and remedy either tonight or tomorrow night. Also I'm going up to Burnlaw at the weekend for the final BDGA tour event of the year so should nail another 3 rounds of dg to add to the total.

Every little helps!!

6 mile week ... so far!

2 more miles were ran this evening. A little slower than the last 2 days (really should have taken a rest day) but still only in 22mins. Still not too bad, and it makes 6 miles this week so far. Rest day tomorrow and then we'll see what happens towards the weekend.

Ratio is getting better :-)

Lunch time running

As I had to stay at home this morning for the plumbers to come and fit a shower I thought I'd take the opportunity to go for a run in the middle of the day. I did the same route as last night and though it was a little trickier due to people shopping down the Parade I went round them without too much effort so was ok. I started off at a slower pace than I did last night, but had less stops (only stopping to walk twice) so when I got back and found I had done it in 20mins again I was happy.

Still building the base remember! ... oh and helping out the ratio! ... oh and helping with the diet challenge I've got going with my wife. The target is to get down to 11 stone by Christmas. At the weigh in yesterday morning I was 12 stone 1 1/2 lbs. So hence why Sept (except Dev social) will be beer free! :-)

Wish me luck!

Beer, Diet and running

Another beer update is needed due to it being after a weekend and obviously I drank some beer over the weekend ... also played some disc golf!!

1 beer -> burger friday
1 beer -> disc golf lunch
3 beers -> Sunday evening

2 rounds of disc golf ... so helps the ratio a bit.

On the plus side, got some new trainers yesterday so will be back to pounding the streets this evening to try and get back to building my base and training properly again. Also the diet started today (so I'm told by the wife), so no beer (except dev social) for at least a month.

Quick update ... not so good!

Quick update as not got much time ...

Since the last update which was before the weekend I've not done any running, played 2 rounds of disc golf (65 and 72(?)) and drank 5 beers ... this isn't going well is it ;-)

Also when tidying up the kitchen last night Lau found some more beer, so we've put that in the fridge and I've decided that I'm going to continue to drink till the dev social on the 11th Sept and then go totally beer free.

On the upside, pay day has come and gone and will look to buy some new trainers so I can get back to running, and will also do a couple of rounds of golf at the weekend with Jon and Nige :-)

Beer Update

Right, the challenge has been thrown down to me with regards to getting healthier and looking better and getting it done before Lau. haha! So I have decided that I will only be drinking beer at the weekends untill after the Dev team social in second week of Sept, then I will be going beer free for a month like I did last year. In addition to this I am going to start counting beers which I drink outside of the house as well, so dev social, burger fridays etc will count towards "The Ratio!".

So quick update on what has happened since getting back which effects the ratio ...

2 beers in the house thursday night (last week)
1 round of disc golf thursday afternoon (I shot 67, Jon shot 69 ... so not bad considering we've not played for a while)
1 beer burger friday

7 coronas at Will and Kate's wedding reception at the weekend

I'm in serious negative now, although I did run 2 miles Monday night so not as bad as it could have been!

And had a beer last night ... grr, stupid ratio!!

A week on, with a weekend to go ...

Yup, thats right, only a weekend to go before I can drink beer, but i'll get to that!

Its been an interesting week at work, everyone going a bit manic and everything needed to be done last week. Another bit which annoyed me was I went in early on Wednesday morning to do the final test release and then an hour later my client sent through their UAT results ... grrr!!

Ah well, thats life ...

On Sunday, Distribution Technology was ranked 40th in the Microsoft Tech Track 100. This is a big thing for my company and its a real achievement for all of us. Its a good time to be working for them and I'm really happy here, much better than my last place ... it really feels like family.

As for the beer, or lack of it ... the guys at work have come up with a cunning idea. Earlier in the summer I was said to be one of the better table football players we have in the dev department, but in the past week or so my game hasn't quite been at the top of its form. The guys think its due to the serious lack of beer in my system and my body is totally beer free and my game hasn't been great. So ... the idea is to see if when i start drinking beer again, the game ability goes back up to the same level.

However, this was potentially thrown out of the water when Russ and I won one of our dev play off games on thursday night and won all 3 of the games we played last night ... maybe I'll be even better when I have some nice cold Heiniken flowing through my body ;-)

Beer -Fu was strong (for a change)

This week was an interesting week in the life of me. From a work aspect I wasn't looking forward to it as I was being put on the project from hell and I could see a few late nights creeping in to finish bits off which I wasn't looking forward to. However, this was changed early on Monday morning and I was left on my other urgent project fixing defects which had been raised by the test team and that was a good thing.

During the rest of the week I managed to get to Body Combat twice *shock* which was awesome. It was a new release launch weekend last week and I was unable to get to either of them so it was good to get there on Monday. The new release is brilliant! I really enjoyed it and I will definatly make the effort to get to the class more over the next few months because of this new release.

Due to this gym visiting week, with a fixed car, I found myself not drinking any alcohol all week. Not even wine! This i feel is helping with the weight loss and will see how much on sunday when I weekly weigh in at the gym.

Something else which sneeked in this week was the change of the BDGA board after the annual AGM. I was asked to be the Director of Competitions by the leaving DoC and the National Director. I said I'd do it as long as the outgoing DoC organises the '08 tour as at the moment I don't have time to do it with organising my wedding, looking for a house etc. This will give me the opportunity to get involved in the sport I love so much and enable me to influence the shape of the sport in the UK.

So all in all it was an interesting week ... added to the fact that I'm still recovering from the groin strain which I picked up playing football a couple of weeks ago. Its pretty much done now, it just twinges every so often so will take it easy this week, carry on working out at the gym and attending BodyCombat and hopefully make it back to football next week.

BEER FREE IS SO HARD

When I gave up beer I thought that it would be pretty easy and going without it for a month would be ok ... i was wrong. I'm actually finding it pretty hard. Chocolate consumption has gone through the roof which isn't good for the loosing of the belly, but maybe once i get my car fixed i can get to the gym more.

On the car front, the MOT only failed today due to emissions, so that should be fixed tomorrow (hopefully). So that means the brakes are fine, but I will get them looked at as I like them to be more responsive. I know a ford fiesta isn't the most powerful car or requires serious performance, but I like a bit more of a response from the brakes.

So ... fingers crossed ... my car will be back up and operational (with a new handle) for not much money and I can get back to going to the gym reguarly etc to get rid of the belly.

Its all a big circle!

Beer-fu was weak!

I was right, this weekend was going to be hard to be beer free, and it was ... so much so, that I couldn't do it ... d'oh!

I started off well, got to the resturant for Lau's bday bash and had a cocktail. It was very nice, but as normal cocktails are pretty expensive ... after a bit of um'ing and ah'ing I decided that i was going to drink Corona instead, generally nicer and cheaper!

So on the plus side, didn't drink any pints of beer, just a few bottles of Corona then went back to red bull, apple sourz and WKD in the club :-)

As for the night, it was very good. The food was good, the bar was good, the club was ok. Wasn't overly feeling the vibe in the club and didn't get my groove on properly, but it was good :-)

As for this week ... as i was weak over the weekend, I will be going alcohol free till friday.

Beer Free - Day #5

Today would have driven anyone to drink, it was a tad frustrating as the bit of work I was doing takes about 45mins - 1hr to execute everytime you make a change. At least I had my old machine kicking about this week to enable me to get on with other things while it was taking its time.

Anyway, the day went (eventually) and then it was 5-a-side football ... first evening of the season and boy were we all very unfit. I think cycling to work has increased my fitness, just not that type of fitness ... anyway, less of that ... we went to the pub after, and I was very good ... no beer for me!

Was offered, but said no ... my beer-fu is strong!

We shall see how strong, when at the weekend for Lau's birthday bash!

Day #1

Well as the end of day one of beer free comes to an end, I feel i should hit a few bit of stats, well one bit of stat ... the current size of the belly which is the target to get smaller. Having measured it earlier this evening, the starting size is 38 inchs.

To put this in perspective, my height is about 5'7, jeans size 32" 30" and weight is approx. 12stone 5 (ish).

So we shall see how this month pans out ...

Beer Free September '07

Its time I've decided that I'm going to try and get rid of my beer belly. I'm sure it'll be the first attempt of many before I get married to loose the belly, but this is the plan ...

... I'm going to go a whole month without drinking any sort of beer or lager or bottled beer or bottled lager. This isn't going to be an alcohol free month and there is no reason why i chose a shortish month, but those are the rules. So lets see if this will work or not ... ... ... could be interesting either way.
